Registration and Practical Information International Workshop Admission and Accreditation Evaluation and Diploma Term-dates Application procedure Fees It is difficult to determine the “official” level of the International Workshop, and it would be fair to say that the course structure is rather unique in this respect. The admission panel values previous experience in art and a minimum of A-Level Secondary Education, as well as a minimum age of 18 years. There is no superior age limit, and mature students are very welcome. As for the level of techniques taught, most of our workshops are introductory , and are meant as “appetizers” to further investigation by the student. It is our experience that however well trained a student may be, there are always new materials and techniques to be learned. This practice implies, however, that the student knows how to perform individual further investigation in art, and this is where we value personal and artistic maturity, something which is not necessarily acquired by posing a university degree. We celebrate diversity, both in terms of culture and nationality as well as in experience and age. It is our experience that the more diverse the student population – on all levels -, the better the course. Students use the course as parallel to MA studies after having completed university training in Fine Arts, Design, Architecture or Teacher-training. Other students join the course in order to prepare for further studies in Art (Foundation), and many students come to Metáfora as a link in their degree or BFA, or as a creative break from their university studies. Some universities worldwide recognise a stay on the International Workshop as experience comparable to credits for their students on a BFA or similar. For further information about exact number of comparable credits, the university in question should contact Metáfora. The International Workshop in itself is not accredited by any university, although Metáfora collaborates with the University of Barcelona. The International Workshop is recognised a Foundation Studies to BA of Fine Art in the UK. Metáfora does not accept exchange students who do not pay for their fees. In several occasions throughout the course, individual evaluation interviews are held with the students. The aim of these interviews is to offer a possibility for the student to make a self-assessment and to evaluate the course. It is also a moment where the tutors will evaluate the work of the student and his/her development on the course. On completing the International Workshop, students are issued with a Diploma, as well as a brief statement (recommendation letter) concerning his/her development and the character of the works produced. This is given only to those students whose assistance has been superior to 80% of the course , and who have produced a satisfying number of finished works. No other certificate of assistance will be given. Students are required to sign in every day at 9'30, and absence lists can be consulted in the office on request. Latecomers and students working at home are considered absent. Absence is also counted even if there is no programmed activity but studio work with tutorials. Calling to say if you are ill or late is not obligatory, but it is always nice to know if you are coming or not. If a student reaches 40% of absence (for reasons which are not medically justified) from the course, he or she may be asked to leave the course. |

| Term Dates Academic year 2008-2009 September 3 rd to December 12 th (Autumn 2008) January 12 th to June 5 th (Spring 2009) Academic year 2008-2009 September 8 th to December 11 th (Autumn 2009) January 12 th to June 4 th (Spring 2010) Staying in a different country or city can be a rich and intense experience. We strongly recommend that foreign students stay at Metáfora for a whole academic year (autumn and spring terms) in order to fully benefit from their time in Barcelona. Students who choose a whole academic year at Metáfora will have preference at the time of applying. However, students who wish to study at Metáfora for only one term (autumn or spring) can state so in the application form ("other periods"), and will be taken into consideration. Shorter periods: Sometimes we have been contacted by students wishing to attend the International Workshop for periods even shorter than the autumn or the spring terms. The possibility of staying for shorter periods is always subject to vacant places on the course, and the minimum stay is 12 weeks. Please contact Metáfora for more information. |
