Level 1, Initial Training
Foundation Course in Art Therapy

The LEVEL 1 of the Art Therapy training aims to provide an introduction to the discipline. The courses benonging to this level are intended for anyone interested in knowing what Art Therapy is, but are also highly recommended for people wishing to undertake postgraduate University training. They provide tools which can prove useful in organising artistic, educational or occupational activities with rehabilitative or therapeautic ends.

Accomplishing LEVEL 1 does not enable to practice as an Art Therapist.

Completion of courses C1 to C6 results in the qualification, Initial Diploma in Art Therapy. This qualification is recognised by the ATe and is the equivalent of a Foundation Course in Art Psychotherapy. The LEVEL 1 courses can be taken individually without a commitment to completing all seven courses, and a certificate of attendance is provided for each course completed. Courses are in Spanish.
What an Art Therapist has to know in order to practice
  • To practice as an Art Therapist you must have a set of skills, knowledge and basic tools. Training courses in Art Therapy have to guarantee that students aquire these fundamental skills and are able to put them into practice without harming either their patients or themselves.
  • In outline, an Art Therapist must posses:
In-depth knowledge of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (initial interviews, reports, methodologies, intervention techniques, etc.)
In-depth knowledge of Psychopathology, Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Group Dynamics.
Sufficient knowledge of the visual arts to accompany patients in the art-making process.
Who regulates the practice and teaching of the profession?
  • In countries where Art Therapy is a recognised profession, the practice and teaching of Art Therapy are regulated by the ministries of Health and Education. In Spain we have yet to achieve this goal, and so regulation of practice and training is carried out by the Spanish Profesional Assocation of Art Therapists (ATe).
The ATe follows the recommendations of those countries where Art Therapy is regulated by law. To view the training requirements of the ATe in more detail, go to: http://www.arteterapia.org.es/

C6 Experiential Art Therapy Groups

Conductor: Anna Vivó , MA Art Therapy, UB
Thursday from 19'15 to 20'45 · Beginning October 2007

The Experiential Groups at Metafora aim to teach Art Therapy through experience. They offer a form of personal exploration through art, a safe place in which to get to know aspects of oneself in relation to others. Experiential Groups are at the core of all training in Art Therapy. The groups comprise a small number of participants and an Art Therapist as conductor. Only the members of the group have access to the group. In the case of a member leaving the group a new place becomes available.
The groups are both for people who would like to train in Art Therapy and those who simply wish to embark on a process of self-exploration through Art Therapy.
The groups meet once a week. In the course of the sessions the production of art work is alternated with discussion. Both creative work and discussion are used to reveal and better understand the unconscious elements of group dynamics.

We recommend joining a group for a complete academic year, i.e. from September to July. Where this is not possible it is recommended that participants attend a minimum number of sessions not less that four months.

Timetable

The groups meet on Thursdays from 19'15 to 20'45, beginning in September and ending at the end of June.

Admission criteria

The groups are open to anybody wishing to use art as a means of self-exploration. Art experience is not necessary. To join a group you must first have an interview with the group facilitator . The facilitator will tell you about the work to be carried out and about the groups which are running at that time.
Once you are a part of a group you commit to attending a minimum of 12 sessions (three months). As a general rule, the majority of participants in this type of group continue for longer periods, which can be from one to several years.
